The Icon Award is new to this years American Music Awards and Rihanna as its first recipient was highly debated by the public. Many have stated that she is too young for the award and that it should have been given to someone who has been in the music industry longer than the 25-year-old. Rihanna might have brought some of the naysayers over to her side with the performance of her hit "Diamonds" that she gave right before receiving the award. The performance was minimalist with no gimmicks and Rihanna was backed by full orchestra that awed the crowd at the Nokia Center where the awards were being held.
